A traditional silk textile produced in Hakata, characterized by an unusually high density of warp threads that gives the fabric a distinctive firm, springy texture and a satisfying sound when tied. The most famous pattern, the 'Kenjō-gara,' features geometric motifs derived from Buddhist symbols: the dokko (vajra) and hanazara (lotus). Designated a Japanese Traditional Craft.
