A comedic theatrical form unique to Hakata in which performers wear a distinctive half-mask covering the upper part of the face (forehead to nose), then deliver witty performances in Hakata dialect with a punchy comic punchline. The distinctive mask design has become an iconic Fukuoka souvenir image, appearing on the confection 'niwaka senbei.'
