野島 (Noshima)

Also known as: 野島・茜島・Noshima

An island in the Seto Inland Sea about 15 km south-east of Mitajiri Port in Hofu. It is read Noshima, without voicing. Almost the whole island lies inside Setonaikai National Park, and a legend says azaleas once covered it so thickly that the sea around it seemed to turn madder-red in bloom, which gave it the alias Akaneshima (茜島).
