Zassyonokuma DistrictZassyonokuma

Also known as: 雑餉隈

A district in southern Hakata-ku, read 'zassyonokuma' — one of Fukuoka's most notoriously difficult place name readings. The name survives as a Nishitetsu station name on the Tenjin-Omuta Line. The character 隈 (kuma) is an archaic word referring to a curved or sheltered corner of terrain. The area was historically a post town on an old highway.
